Your UAE Trademark Has Been Published: What Happens During the 30-Day Opposition Period?

UAE Trademark Opposition

A published UAE trademark has not completed registration yet. Publication opens a 30-day opposition period during which an interested party may challenge the application before the mark proceeds further. For the applicant, this stage is mainly about knowing the deadline, watching for any formal objection and responding correctly if one is filed.

We support UAE businesses with trademark registration, opposition matters and related trademark protection services.

What Does the 30-Day UAE Trademark Opposition Period Mean?

Publication is an important step, but it is not the trademark certificate. Once an accepted application appears in the UAE Trademark Bulletin, a 30-day period opens in which an interested party may file a reasoned opposition. Until that window closes, the application can still face a challenge.

The volume of filings makes this stage worth watching closely. During the first half of 2026 alone, the UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism registered 17,217 national and international trademarks. The figure shows how active the country’s trademark system remains, with new rights continually entering the register.

For the applicant, the next 30 days are mainly about keeping the file and deadline under control:

  • Record the Trademark Bulletin publication date.
  • Keep the application and supporting documents accessible.
  • Watch for an official opposition notice.
  • Do not treat the published mark as finally registered.

There is no need to prepare an opposition response when nobody has challenged the mark. What does need attention is any notice that arrives during the process. A filed objection changes the position quickly, bringing a separate response deadline and a formal review of the competing claims.

What Happens If Someone Opposes Your Published UAE Trademark?

The procedure is set out in Cabinet Decision No. 57 of 2022. An opposition must be reasoned and filed within 30 days from publication. The process then moves from the objector’s filing to notice, response and a Ministry decision.

1. The Opponent Files a Reasoned Objection

The objection is not just a complaint that two names look alike. It has to be filed through the competent trademark service with supporting material. In practice, disputes often turn on earlier trademark rights, similarity between marks, the covered goods or services, or another legal basis that affects registration.

2. The Ministry Notifies the Trademark Applicant

After an opposition is filed, the competent department sends a copy to the applicant. Under the executive regulations, that service must occur within 30 days from submission of the objection. This is the point where the published application becomes an active opposition matter rather than a waiting-period issue.

3. The Applicant Has 30 Days to Reply

The reply deadline runs from notification of the objection, not from the original publication date. A written response must be submitted within 30 days. Missing that response period is serious because the regulations state that the application will be treated as waived if the applicant does not reply in time.

4. The Ministry Reviews the Dispute and Issues a Decision

A hearing may be arranged where the competent department considers it appropriate. Both sides can be asked for statements and evidence before a reasoned decision is issued. The outcome may allow the application to proceed, stop it, or attach conditions depending on the issues accepted by the authority.

What Should You Do During the UAE Trademark Publication Window?

The UAE had 421,913 national and international trademarks registered by the end of April 2026. In a register of that size, publication gives earlier rights holders a formal chance to spot new marks that may affect them.

For an applicant, a short publication checklist is usually enough:

  • Save the bulletin entry and publication date.
  • Confirm the owner name, mark and classes are shown correctly.
  • Keep evidence of earlier use or brand ownership organized where relevant.
  • Route any Ministry notice to the person handling the filing immediately.

If no opposition is filed, the application moves toward final registration after the 30-day period ends. The applicant then has a separate post-opposition registration step to complete within the Ministry’s stated timeline.

FAQs

How long is the trademark opposition period in the UAE?

Any concerned person may file a reasoned opposition within 30 days from publication of the mark in the Ministry bulletin.

Does publication mean my UAE trademark is already registered?

No. Publication confirms acceptance for publication. Registration follows only after the opposition window closes and any filed objection is resolved.

How long do I have to answer a trademark opposition?

The applicant has 30 days from notification to reply. Missing that deadline means the application may be treated as waived.

Is a hearing automatic after a UAE trademark opposition?

Not always. The competent department may arrange a hearing when it considers appropriate before issuing its decision on the opposition.

What happens if nobody opposes my published trademark?

If no opposition is filed, the applicant can move to registration and complete the post-publication registration step within 30 days.
